CHIEFS OF THE UPPER EAST REGION AT A WAR PATH OVER THE SITTING OF A REGIONAL AIRPORT

There seems to be animosity among traditional rulers in the Upper East Region as Paramount Chiefs of the Kasena-Nakana Traditional Council expressed their discontentment with a petition the Chiefs of Bolgatanga, Nabdam, Bongo and Tongo, known jointly as BONABOTO, sent to the President of the republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo accusing the Minister of Aviation and Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central for his attempts to relocate a purported sitting of the Upper East Regional airport from Bolgataga to Paga.

A resolution by the chiefs of the Kasena-Nakana Traditional Council at a meeting on 3rd June, 2020, cited by ajnewsonline.com, demanding an apology from the Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional area, Tong Raana Nalebtang Robert Mosore who led the BONABOTO delegation to ask for the cessation of any progress of work at the airstrip at Paga in the Kasena-Nakana traditional area.

According to the chiefs of the Kasena-Nakana traditional area, they recognize the legitimate right of the Tongraan and the people of the BONABOTO areas to demand and request any assistance from government or any party in support of the development of their respective areas.

However, they take exception to any move by BONABOTO to stop the progress of work and the development of any part of the region in advancement of their own parochial interests, particularly the Kassena-Nankana Traditional Areas. This they said, would amount to retrogressive and counter productive to the advancement of the agenda of government and the nation.

They Chiefs(of Kassena-Nankana) appealed to President Akuffo Addo and his government to continue the upgrading of the Seventy-Eight year old Airstrip at Paga into a fully functional airport to serve the people living and working in the area and the region at large.
According to the Chiefs of the Kasena-Nakana Traditional Council the upgrading of the Paga airstrip would be faster and cheaper without constraints of land as there has not been any encroachment since 1942 when it was constructed by the colonial masters.

VISIT OF THE CHIEFS AND ELDERS OF BOLGATANGA, NABDAM, BONGO AND TONGO (BONABOTO) TO THE PRESIDENCY.

On the 29th of May, 2020, the Chiefs and Elders of Bolgatanga, Nabdam, Bongo and Tongo, known as (BONABOTO), led by the Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional area, Tong Raana Nalebtang Robert Mosore in a petitioned accused the Aviation Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda of altering government’s plan to build a regional airport in Bolgataga to Paga. The group in their petition further asked President Akufo-Addo to set up a Committee to investigate circumstances under which the planned airport project in Bolgatanga was diverted to Paga.

“Mr President, contrary to your firm commitment to the people of Bongo, our honourable Joseph Adda, since taking over as Minister for Aviation has been making frantic efforts to redevelop the technically unsuitable Paga airstrip against the interest of the people of the Upper East Region and the North East Region. Our case between the Bolgatanga airport in the Regional capital is not born out of ethnic interests but on a real technical and commercial basis and so we carry here a petition on behalf of our people, and signed by the paramount chiefs of the BONABOTO area and chiefs of Sumbrungu and Bolga-Sirigu. With the background of the Bolgatanga airport, and weeks of meetings between the Regional Coordinating Committee and civil aviation we have the plan of the airport herewith for your review and consideration.”

This however did not sit well with Paramount Chiefs of the Kasena-Nakana Traditional Council as in a resolution, they expressed disquiet and disappointment at the actions of the BONABOTO.
They believe the posture by BONABOTO led by the Paramount Chief of Talansi and the Council of State Representative of the Region, Tong Raana Nalebtang Robert Mosore has the potential of causing division in the region.

They(Kassena-Nankana chiefs) therefore called on the Chairman of the Council of State to call the Tong Raana Nalebtang Robert Mosore to order and to also asked him to renda an unqualified apology to the Minister of Aviation and Member of Parliament for the Navrongo Central, Joseph Kofi Adda.
They said, failure by the Paramount Chief of Talansi Tong Raana Nalebtang Robert Mosore to do so would be construed as an insult to the people of the Constituency and could result in an unhealthy relation amongst the people of the region.

They said it is incumbent on the Tongraana who is an elected representative of the Upper East Region at the Council of State, to promote peace and development in the region rather than breed animosity among the peoples of the region
